Medical wisdom

Doctors are men who prescribe medicines of which they know little, to cure diseases of which they know less, in human beings of whom they know nothing.

An alarming history of medicine - for fellow cynics

The history of medicine is a fascinating subject; the story how we came from ignorance to fractionally less ignorance throughout thousands of years of trial and error.

The Alarming History of Medicine: Amusing anecdotes from Hippocrates to Heart Transplants by Richard Gordon tells the tale of medical advancements as viewed by a fellow cynic. I particularly like the description of the doctors of yore who have shaped the clinical medicine of today "all clever, some cunning, the lucky ones anointed with inspiration or serendipidy, many of them simply abnormally obsessive classifiers of men and microbes, or simply abnormally deft fingers." This book serves as an inspiration for todays struggling clinicials as no matter what conundrum faces you on a ward round, someone else has faced the same prediciment before and undoubtably they did not have the internet to turn to for help.

The Gods of Medical Humour Part Four

The ultimate doctor - Doctor Who.

Yes I know he isn't a real "medical" doctor, but I bet he would be able to fix whatever was wrong with you without batting an eyelid.

Really excited about the new Doctor Who series.

Replace your medical dictionary

A good medical dictionary is a must for all
medical students so that you can understand
what on earth your lecture notes are about.
Standard staples include the likes of the
Chambers medical dictionary. However, an
alternative medical dictionary can be found
at http://alt-med-dictionary.com/ This one
is much better as when you are asked a
question about a rare obscure disease on a
ward round you can reply with a witty retort
rather than a blank face and general ignorance.

The Gods of Medical Humour Part Three

Idol number 3 - Dr Nick Riviera.

Dr Nick Riviera is the first of the Simpsons characters that we must mention. He epitomises the ultimate in medical negligance. He even has his own wikipedia page! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Nick_Riviera
